This FAQ is for UCSB undergraduates who are interested in applying to be SKILLS mentors.

How many hours per week will I need to commit to the program?
You can expect to spend around 5-8 hours per week on SKILLS-related activities.
Is there any compensation for participation in the program?
Yes! You register in LING 192 for either 2 or 4 units, to be determined based on the amount of weekly hours you commit to.
Do I need a car to participate in the program?
It's preferable if you do have a car, but if you don't have one we can usually figure out a carpooling situation.
Do I have to be a Linguistics or LC&S major to participate?
No, although students from those two majors do get priority. You just have to have an interest in language and social justice and a passion for working with youth.
What kind of experience is required?
Some kind of experience with linguistics or linguistic anthropology, Latina/o youth, and/or first-generation college-bound high school (or middle school) students is preferred. It's also nice if you speak Spanish, although it's not required.
